February 12-14, 2009 Major Track Stats – Does the Product impact Wagering and Purses?

For the second consecutive weekend we tabulated and reviewed certain statistics from major harness tracks in North America and France (three Meadowlands cards, two from Yonkers, three from Pompano Park, three from Woodbine, two from Paris-Vincennes and one from Cagnes-sur-Mer). Interestingly the results mirrored the prior week. Average favorite odds in North America were less than half that of France yet winning favorites were about the same. Average field size in North America was about 65% of the races in France and purses in France (calculated in USD) were over six times higher than at the North American tracks. Even after removing the two Sunday feature events from Paris-Vincennes the FR average purse in USD was four times the comparable North American metric.

Conclusions:
Average North America average favorite odds 1.7 to 1 France average favorite odds 3.64 to 1
Average North America average field size 8.6 France average field size 13.3
Percent of winning favorites 35.5% Percent of winning favorites 38.5%
Average purse/race $16,844 Average purse/race in USD $96,124
